Welcome to the Cybership Adventure, and its new berth on the Internet. Built in 1926, 121' 6" in length with a main topmast 110 feet high, Adventure is one of the last remaining vessels in the great line of Essex-built Grand Banks fishing schooners, and a National Historical Landmark. In her heyday in the '30s and '40s when she plied the waters of Georges Bank, Adventure brought in more fish and income from the sea than any other dory fishing schooner. Donated to the city of Gloucester in 1988 by her owner, Captain Jim Sharp, Adventure has become a living classroom for maritime-based experiential learning. Adventure is staffed by volunteers and by teachers from Gloucester Public Schools and Salem State College in Massachusetts and attended by students and sailing enthusiasts the world over.

Complementing the scraping, painting, woodworking and sailmaking that go into rebuilding and refitting the schooner, the ship as a practicing classroom now refines the mental labors that go into life on the sea: marine biology, ecology, navigation, seamanship. As when we sail the ship, no one sits and watches. We all hoist the mainsail. So too as Adventure sails forth on the cyberseas, we need all hands to participate: real-life sailmakers and shipwrights, teachers, students, and sponsors (corporate and private). Spend a few moments exploring the site, and if you want a dose of reality and salt air, use the maps and other Gloucester resources to find our berth and come aboard for a visit aboard the Schooner Adventure.

The wallpaper throughout this site is a copy of a letter Captain Jeff Thomas wrote on the sixth of January, 1934, to his married elder daughter, Florence Wiley.
